- Altaba Inc. is an independent, publicly traded, non-diversified, closed-end management investment company headquartered in New York City. It was formed in 2017 from the remnants of Yahoo! Inc. after Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo's core internet business. Altaba’s main business activities include managing its investment portfolio, which historically included significant equity stakes in Alibaba Group Holding Limited and Yahoo Japan Corporation. The company primarily holds investments in public equity securities, partnerships, bonds, and patents. Altaba's investment strategy involves tracking the combined investment returns of its significant holdings, particularly focusing on Alibaba shares and Yahoo Japan shares. The company no longer operates internet services or related business lines, having transitioned fully into an investment management company following Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo's operating businesses in mid-2017. Significant recent changes include the gradual liquidation of key assets, notably the sale of its stake in Yahoo Japan in 2018 for $4.3 billion and the planned sale of its Alibaba Group stake announced in 2019, which led to the announcement of its shutdown and liquidation plans that year. Altaba completed its dissolution process by late 2019, ceasing trading on Nasdaq under the symbol AABA and filing for legal dissolution in Delaware. Post-dissolution, the company has conducted liquidating distributions to shareholders and handled remaining litigation and financial obligations, including agreements with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and settlements related to previous security breaches. Altaba’s core legacy portfolio before its liquidation included holdings in Alibaba Group, Yahoo Japan, and smaller equity investments in companies such as Hortonworks, Gomaji, Envestnet, Rimage Corporation, SeatGeek, Protagenic Therapeutics, Eastman Kodak Company, and Paperless Post. The company also managed a patent holding subsidiary known as Excalibur IP, which it sold in 2020. Since the liquidation announcement, most operational activities have focused on managing distribution of remaining assets and resolving outstanding legal and tax matters. Altaba operates primarily in the investment management and holding company industry segments, serving institutional investors and shareholders globally from its New York base. Founded originally as Yahoo! Inc. in 1994 and renamed Altaba in 2017, the company has since ceased traditional operations and is effectively winding down its affairs. Therefore, Altaba Inc. currently functions as a closed-end management investment company focused on liquidating and distributing its remaining assets following the sale of its major holdings and the cessation of its operating businesses, marking its transformation from a diversified internet company to an investment fund with a focus on capital return to shareholders. Recent activities primarily encompass liquidating distributions approved by the board and resolution of historic litigation related to Yahoo’s past operations. The company’s transition reflects strategic divestitures and financial restructuring executed between 2017 and 2025, positioning it as a legacy entity of Yahoo! Inc. in the financial services and investment management sector.
