Business
Airtel Africa Plc provides telecommunications and mobile money services across 14 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily in Nigeria, East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda), and Francophone Africa (Chad, DRC, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Niger, Madagascar, Seychelles); the company, majority owned by Bharti Airtel and headquartered in London, UK, was incorporated in 2018. It offers an integrated suite of mobile voice services including pre- and post-paid wireless voice, international roaming, and fixed-line telephony; data services encompassing 4G and 5G mobile broadband, home broadband, fibre connectivity, and data centres with 95% of sites providing 4G coverage across all markets and 5G available in five; Airtel Money mobile financial services featuring digital wallets, payments, microloans, savings products, and international money transfers serving 38 million customers; and enterprise solutions via Airtel Business including Network-as-a-Service and connectivity for businesses. Airtel Africa operates over 34,500 infrastructure sites, 75,400 km of fibre, and 3.3 million retail touchpoints, targeting underpenetrated markets with low mobile penetration and limited banking access to drive digital and financial inclusion for its 152.7 million customers. Recent developments include parent Bharti Airtel increasing its stake from 57.29% to 61.75% through cash acquisitions in early 2025; a May 2025 agreement with SpaceX to integrate Starlink satellite internet for remote areas, with licences secured in nine markets; August 2025 infrastructure-sharing deals with Vodacom in Tanzania, DRC, and Mozambique, and earlier 2025 pacts with MTN in Uganda and Nigeria; an August 2025 strategic partnership with Xtelify (Airtel India's digital arm); raised FY2026 capex guidance to $875-900 million focused on network expansion, spectrum, IT, and digital channels amid surging data demand and 46.8% smartphone penetration; CEO transition with Sunil Taldar succeeding Segun Ogunsanya in July 2024; and launches of Nxtra data centres in Nigeria, Airtel Ads, and Telesonic fibre services.
