Business
Atlas Mara Limited (AAMAF) is a British Virgin Islands-domiciled financial services holding company focused on acquiring, investing in, and operating banking and financial institutions across sub-Saharan Africa. Founded on 28 November 2013 by former Barclays CEO Bob Diamond through Atlas Merchant Capital LLC and Ashish Thakkar through Mara Group Holdings Limited, the company is headquartered in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands, and listed on the London Stock Exchange's Main Market under ticker ATMA.LN as well as on U.S. OTC Pink Sheets under AAMAF; its shares have experienced severe depreciation, trading at effectively zero value with minimal liquidity as of mid-2024. The group historically offered a range of commercial banking products and services including loans, checking and savings accounts, investments, debit cards, transaction banking, non-interest income-generating services such as fees and commissions, bancassurance, and digital banking solutions through subsidiaries like BancABC-branded banks serving individuals and businesses; it previously held stakes in entities such as Union Bank of Nigeria (until fully acquired by Titan Trust Bank in 2022), Rswitch Limited (payment solutions, now under Millicom), and various BancABC operations providing credit, savings, and insurance-related products. Operations spanned Botswana, Germany (via holding company African Development Corporation AG), Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, targeting fragmented markets to drive financial inclusion, economic growth, and technological innovation in personal, business, and corporate banking segments. In recent years, Atlas Mara has undergone a major divestiture program as part of its strategic repositioning to maximize creditor value amid financial challenges, including the full sale of Atlas Mara Zambia (formerly BancABC Zambia, acquired via merger with Finance Bank Zambia in 2016) to Access Bank Zambia Limited in January 2024, which created one of Zambia's top banks by assets; divestitures of BancABC Tanzania (rebranded Access Bank Tanzania in June 2024), BancABC Botswana and Mozambique (to Access Bank Group), Banque Populaire du Rwanda (to KCB Group), and Union Bank of Nigeria (to Titan Trust Bank in May 2022); and cancellation of its LSE listing in November 2021; as of 2023, remaining subsidiaries include BancABC Zimbabwe and African Development Corporation AG (Frankfurt-based holding company), with the group reporting a net loss of USD 287.8 million for the year ended February 28, 2022, on net interest income of USD 56.5 million, and focusing on finalizing asset realizations.
