Business
Ameren Corporation operates as a rate-regulated energy company primarily engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity and natural gas. The company serves approximately 2.5 million electric customers and more than 900,000 natural gas customers across Illinois and Missouri, covering a service area of about 64,000 square miles. Its product portfolio includes electric generation from a diverse mix of sources such as coal, nuclear, natural gas, hydroelectric, and solar; electric transmission and distribution services; natural gas distribution through an extensive pipeline infrastructure; and energy efficiency programs targeted at residential, commercial, and industrial customers. Ameren owns over 8,000 miles of transmission lines and maintains generating capacity exceeding 9,300 megawatts primarily through its subsidiary Ameren Missouri, which operates more than 10,200 megawatts of generating capacity, along with Ameren Illinois, which provides electric transmission, distribution, and natural gas services. Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, the company was established in 1997 through the merger of Union Electric Company and Central Illinois Public Service Company. Recent major developments include the approval by Missouri regulators of Ameren Missouri's new rate structure designed to serve large new business customers, advancing the economic growth in the state while maintaining consumer safeguards. In 2025, Ameren unveiled the Big Hollow Energy Center, a hybrid facility combining natural gas generation and energy storage to enhance energy reliability during peak demand periods. Additionally, Ameren Services Company formed a strategic partnership with Diamond Communications in 2023 to expand wireless infrastructure deployment utilizing Ameren's communication and transmission towers, facilitating wireless carrier network expansion across Illinois and Missouri. In 2025, Ameren also completed a public offering of common stock raising approximately $520 million to support infrastructure investments. The company continues to invest heavily in modernizing the electric grid through smart switchgear deployments, IntelliRupters to reduce outage impacts, and enhanced infrastructure upgrades to boost reliability. Ameren's ongoing strategic focus remains on safe, reliable energy delivery, sustainability, and infrastructure modernization across its Illinois and Missouri service territories. Ameren Corporation is a Fortune 500 company operating in the utilities industry within the Midwest United States, serving chiefly Illinois and Missouri markets with regulated electricity and natural gas services. Its subsidiaries include Ameren Missouri and Ameren Illinois, which function as the operational arms delivering integrated energy solutions. The company employs approximately 9,000 people and is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. Key business segments encompass electric power generation and distribution; natural gas distribution; energy infrastructure services; and energy efficiency initiatives tailored for diverse customer segments including residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal clients. The company’s recent strategic alliances, infrastructure investments, and utility service enhancements underscore its commitment to supporting regional economic growth and sustainable energy futures.
