Business
AGL Energy Limited is an Australian integrated energy company engaged in the generation and retailing of electricity and natural gas to residential, commercial, and wholesale customers across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Founded in 1837 and headquartered in Sydney, the company operates Australia's largest electricity generation portfolio with approximately 11,000 MW of capacity, encompassing coal-fired stations such as Bayswater (2,640 MW, New South Wales), Loy Yang A (2,225 MW, Victoria), and the decommissioned Liddell (2,000 MW, New South Wales); gas-fired facilities including Torrens Island (1,280 MW, South Australia) and Barker Inlet (210 MW, South Australia); renewable assets like hydroelectric plants at Dartmouth (180 MW), Eildon (120 MW), and Kiewa (391 MW) in Victoria; wind farms such as Hallett (350 MW, South Australia), Oaklands Hill (63 MW, Victoria), and Wattle Point (91 MW, South Australia); solar installations including Broken Hill (53 MW) and Nyngan (102 MW) in New South Wales; natural gas storage at Newcastle (New South Wales) and Silver Springs (Queensland); and emerging technologies such as grid-scale batteries, virtual power plants, broadband, mobile services, solar battery systems, and energy efficiency products. AGL serves around 4.5 million customer accounts, representing one of the big three retailers in the National Electricity Market, and maintains joint ventures like ActewAGL for electricity, gas, and telecommunications in the Australian Capital Territory and southeast New South Wales. In recent developments, AGL divests a 19.9% stake in Tilt Renewables to QIC and a Future Fund-led consortium for A$750 million in November 2025 to fund battery energy storage system expansions toward a 6 GW firming and renewable target by fiscal 2030, while securing long-term power purchase agreements for 123 MW from Palmer Wind Farm and 105 MW from Waddi Wind Farm; acquires Tesla's South Australia virtual power plant in July 2025 and a 20% stake in UK-based smart energy platform Kaluza for A$150 million in June 2024; purchases Firm Power and Terrain Solar for A$250 million in August 2024 to bolster grid-scale battery, solar, and wind development; and acquires Photon Energy's 150 MW Yadnarie electro-thermal energy storage project in July 2025, alongside advancing plans to close all coal-fired stations by 2035 including Bayswater in 2033.
