Business
Akzo Nobel N.V. (AKZOY) manufactures and supplies a broad portfolio of paints and performance coatings worldwide. The company operates through two primary segments: Decorative Paints, which provides interior and exterior paints, lacquers, varnishes and surface preparation products for professional and do-it-yourself consumers under brands including Dulux and Sikkens; and Performance Coatings, encompassing automotive and specialty coatings, marine and protective coatings, industrial coatings, and powder coatings under brands such as International and Interpon. These offerings serve diverse end-markets including construction, automotive, aerospace, marine, energy, packaging, infrastructure, shipbuilding and consumer goods; the company maintains manufacturing and sales operations in over 150 countries across Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and other regions. Headquartered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Akzo Nobel traces its origins to 1646 through predecessor entities, with the modern corporate form established via the 1994 merger of Akzo and Nobel Industries. The company employs approximately 34,600 people and generated revenue of $11.6 billion in 2024. In a transformative development announced in November 2025, Akzo Nobel agrees to an all-stock merger of equals with Axalta Coating Systems Ltd., creating a premier global coatings entity with approximately $17 billion in annual revenue, an enterprise value of $25 billion, and combined portfolios spanning powder, aerospace, refinish, mobility, marine and protective, industrial coatings, and decorative paints across 173 manufacturing sites in 173 countries. The transaction targets pre-tax run-rate synergies of $600 million, primarily from procurement, overhead efficiencies, footprint optimization and supply chain enhancements, with 90% realizable within three years post-closing; it enhances R&D capabilities with $400 million annual spend, 91 facilities and 4,200 specialists.
