Business
Alpha Metallurgical Resources, Inc. (NYSE: AMR) is a Tennessee-based mining company that produces, processes, and sells metallurgical and thermal coal primarily from underground and surface mining complexes across Virginia and West Virginia in the Central Appalachian coal basin. The company supplies high-quality, low-ash metallurgical coal, including High-Volatile A, High-Volatile B, Mid-Volatile, and Low-Volatile types essential for coke production; incidental thermal coal as a byproduct; through operations encompassing surface mines such as 88 Strip, Kingston North, and Workman Creek South; underground mines including Deep Mine 41, Black Eagle, and Road Fork 52; and coal preparation plants, with shipments to domestic and international steel and coke producers in Asia, Europe, and South America via rail, barge, and East Coast export terminals. Headquartered in Bristol, Tennessee, since its emergence from restructuring in 2016 (originally tracing to Alpha Natural Resources founded in 2002), Alpha Metallurgical Resources focuses on the metallurgical coal segment for global steelmakers and industrial customers. Recently, the company announced 2026 domestic sales commitments for approximately 3.6 million tons of metallurgical coal at an average price of $136.75 per ton as of November 2025; advanced development of the Kingston Wildcat mine for low-volatile metallurgical coal production starting late 2025; lowered 2025 cost of coal sales guidance to $101-$107 per ton and adjusted other financial outlooks including SG&A and idle operations expenses following strong Q2 2025 cost performance; paused and plans to restart its $1.5 billion share repurchase program opportunistically amid market softness; and anticipates benefits from the 2026-2029 Section 45X tax credit for metallurgical coal production costs under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, potentially $30-$50 million annually.
