Business
Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ARNA), a biopharmaceutical company founded in 1997 and headquartered in San Diego, California, develops small molecule drugs targeting G protein-coupled receptors for therapeutic applications in immuno-inflammatory, cardiovascular, and pain-related disorders. The company's pipeline features etrasimod, an oral selective sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator in development for ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, atopic dermatitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, and alopecia areata; ralinepag, an oral prostacyclin receptor agonist for pulmonary arterial hypertension; temanogrel, a selective 5-HT2A inverse agonist for microvascular obstruction and Raynaud's phenomenon in systemic sclerosis; olorinab, a cannabinoid receptor 2 agonist for visceral pain in gastrointestinal conditions including irritable bowel syndrome; and APD418, a beta-3 adrenergic receptor antagonist for acute heart failure. Previously marketed Belviq (lorcaserin) for obesity, which generated modest sales and was sold to Eisai in 2017 along with associated royalties. Arena operates primarily in the United States with select international partnerships, such as a 2017 development and commercialization alliance with Everest Medicines for ralinepag and etrasimod in Greater China, entitling Arena to milestone payments up to $224 million and royalties. In March 2022, Pfizer completed its $6.7 billion acquisition of Arena, integrating its pipeline into Pfizer's inflammation and immunology portfolio to accelerate clinical programs like the Phase 3 ELEVATE-UC trial for etrasimod, with Arena now operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary and its shares delisted from Nasdaq.
