Business
Aspen Aerogels, Inc. (ASPN) designs, develops, manufactures, and sells high-performance aerogel insulation materials primarily for energy infrastructure, sustainable building applications, and electric vehicle battery thermal management in the United States, Canada, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America. The company operates through two segments: Energy Industrial, which provides aerogel blankets such as Cryogel Z for LNG facilities, Pyrogel XTE and Pyrogel HPS for refining, petrochemicals, power generation, and subsea applications; and Thermal Barrier, which offers PyroThin thermal runaway barriers for EV battery packs and energy storage, alongside a carbon aerogel program to enhance lithium-ion battery cell performance by extending range and reducing costs. Additional products include Spaceloft for sustainable building materials; the company also delivers technical services encompassing unit inspections, installation guides, thickness tables, specification documents, and contractor training. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Northborough, Massachusetts, with manufacturing facilities in East Providence, Rhode Island, and partnerships in China and Mexico, Aspen Aerogels serves EV manufacturers, automotive suppliers, battery producers, energy infrastructure operators, and construction firms worldwide. Recent developments include a new PyroThin award in Q1 2025 with a leading American OEM for next-generation EV platforms, expanded collaborations with advanced energy storage companies for data center and grid applications, and the opening of two assembly plants near Monterrey, Mexico, for aerogel roll production and thermal barrier assembly, with plans to acquire the facilities; the company halted construction of its planned $325 million Georgia facility in early 2025 to prioritize capacity expansions in East Providence and China, targeting $200 million additional annual production by 2026. These strategic shifts fortify supply chain resilience amid rising demand for electrification solutions, while maintaining ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 certifications across operations.
