Business
Avista Corporation Avista Corp. (AVA) operates as an energy company engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity; distribution of natural gas; and other energy-related services primarily through its Avista Utilities segment, which serves approximately 403,000 electric customers and 369,000 natural gas customers across 30,000 square miles in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, parts of southern and eastern Oregon, and through its subsidiary Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P) in Juneau, Alaska; the company generates power from a diverse portfolio including hydroelectric, thermal, wind, and biomass resources with a total capacity of around 1,900 megawatts. Founded in 1889 as Washington Water Power Company in Spokane Falls, Washington Territory, and renamed Avista Corporation in 1999, it maintains corporate headquarters in Spokane, Washington, targeting residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the Pacific Northwest with a focus on reliability, affordability, and sustainability initiatives such as energy efficiency programs and renewable energy integration. Recent developments include regulatory approval for new electric and natural gas rates effective September 2025, increasing annual base electric revenues by approximately $19 million; initiation of a 2025 all-source request for proposals seeking up to 425 megawatts of new capacity and demand response resources; and ongoing investments in grid modernization, clean energy compliance with regional goals, and infrastructure upgrades.
