Business
Avantium N.V. is a chemical technology company specializing in the development and commercialization of bio-based plastics and renewable chemicals. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Avantium operates through three business segments: Avantium R&D Solutions, Avantium Renewable Chemistries, and Avantium Renewable Polymers. The company’s core products include Releaf®, a 100% plant-based and recyclable polyethylene furanoate (PEF) polymer used for food and beverage packaging, cosmetic packaging, fashion, and industrial fibers; FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a key building block for sustainable plastics; and plantMEG, used as an intermediate in polymer production. Additionally, Avantium provides advanced catalysis products and proprietary technology solutions to improve chemical processes for clients. In recent developments, Avantium has formed a strategic alliance with Tereos, a global leader in sugar and starch production, and LVMH GAÏA, the environmental R&D division of the luxury conglomerate LVMH. This partnership aims to scale the industrial production of Releaf® across Europe by leveraging Avantium’s proprietary YXY® Technology, Tereos’ plant-based feedstock, and market demand driven by LVMH and others. Avantium is advancing the commercial start-up of its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, Netherlands, with successful implementation of its sugar dehydration unit and ongoing commissioning of oxidation and purification units. The company has secured multiple offtake agreements and capacity reservations, new financing of €20 million, and regulatory approvals to support this expansion. Avantium has also signed capacity reservation agreements with other industrial partners for the accelerated deployment of Releaf® and obtained FDA approval for PEF packaging material for food contact applications. Avantium targets industries including packaging, textiles, and specialty chemicals, focusing on replacing fossil-based plastics with renewable alternatives. It has global operations but is centered in Europe with a growing consortium of strategic partners across the continent. The company is positioned as a pioneer in renewable chemistry and circular polymer materials, driving the shift to sustainable plastics with technology innovation and market commercialization efforts.
