Business
American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings, Inc. (AAM) designs, engineers, and manufactures driveline and metal forming technologies primarily for the global automotive and commercial vehicle industries. Its core products include front and rear axles, drive shafts, differentials, power transfer units, rear drive modules, and electric and hybrid driveline systems for light trucks, SUVs, crossover vehicles, passenger cars, and commercial vehicles. The company also produces precision-engineered metal forming components such as transmission shafts, suspension parts, differential gears, ring gears, and pinion gears, leveraging advanced forging, machining, and heat treatment capabilities. AAM serves as a key Tier 1 supplier focused on internal combustion engine, hybrid, and electric vehicle markets with comprehensive engineering, validation, and manufacturing services. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, AAM operates globally with facilities and customers across multiple regions. Recent major changes include AAM's strategic acquisition of Dowlais Group plc, the parent company of GKN Automotive, completed through a $1.4 billion cash-and-stock transaction announced in 2025. This acquisition significantly enhances AAM’s capabilities and market position in driveline and metal forming technologies, especially expanding its product offerings and footprint in the electrified vehicle market, including hybrid and electric drivetrains. The merger brings complementary expertise, with Dowlais shareholders owning a substantial portion of the combined entity and integration plans involving key executives from Dowlais joining AAM’s leadership. The European Commission granted unconditional clearance for this merger in late 2025. AAM continues investing heavily in research and development, approximately $220 million annually, focusing on innovation in electric propulsion systems, advanced materials, and manufacturing efficiency. The company maintains a strong commitment to lean manufacturing, automation, and quality control standards (ISO/TS) to meet the evolving automotive industry demands. This combination positions AAM as a leading global supplier with a comprehensive portfolio supporting electric, hybrid, and conventional powertrain systems, aiming to serve major automotive OEMs worldwide with integrated, high-performance driveline and metal forming solutions.
