Business
Braskem S.A. produces thermoplastic resins and petrochemicals, operating as the largest producer of such materials in the Americas and a global leader in biopolymers. The company manufactures polyethylene including green polyethylene from sugarcane ethanol, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, basic chemicals such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene and xylenes; it also offers specialties, solvents, olefins, aromatics, intermediaries and renewable-based products like bioMEG and bioMPG. Braskem serves diverse segments including packaging, healthcare, automotive, construction, agriculture and consumer goods; it exports to over 70 countries across five continents with industrial units in Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Founded in 2002 through the integration of companies from the Odebrecht Organization and Mariani Group and headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil, Braskem maintains 41 industrial units and over 8,000 employees worldwide. Braskem recently invests nearly USD 60 million to expand I'm green biopolymer capacity by 30% to 260,000 tons annually, advancing toward 1 million tons by 2030; it approved R$4.2 billion for a Rio de Janeiro plant expansion adding 220,000 tons per year of ethylene and polyethylene by 2028 using ethane feedstock under long-term Petrobras supply; further USD 100 million supports polyethylene, PVC and chemical expansions across Brazilian states. The company pursues partnerships including with SCG Chemicals for a potential I'm green plant in Thailand, Lummus Technology for biopolymer licensing, Sojitz for bioMEG and bioMPG production, and Olin for ethylene dichloride supply to enhance vinyls operations. Braskem advances its Transformation Plan emphasizing gas-based feedstocks, circular economy via Wenew recycling ecosystem, and carbon neutrality by 2050; it faces ongoing ownership developments with Novonor's stake attracting buyout interest from entities like Petroquimica Verde and prior bidders.
