- BlackRock Taxable Municipal Bond Trust (NYSE: BBN) is a closed-end fixed income fund managed by BlackRock Advisors, LLC, that seeks high current income with a secondary objective of capital appreciation by investing primarily in taxable municipal securities, including Build America Bonds issued by state and local governments to finance infrastructure projects such as public schools, roads, bridges, ports, transportation systems, and public buildings; tax-exempt municipal securities; U.S. Treasury securities; obligations of the U.S. government, its agencies, and instrumentalities; and corporate bonds associated with the municipal market, such as those issued by private universities, hospitals, or military housing developments. Under normal market conditions, the Trust allocates at least 80% of its managed assets to taxable municipal securities, with up to 20% in other eligible securities, and employs leverage to enhance returns. The portfolio features long-duration holdings like Chicago IL Wastewater Transmission revenue bonds, New Jersey St Tpk Auth Tpk Rev bonds, and Illinois St bonds, with an effective duration of approximately 11.25 years, weighted average life to maturity of 22.38 years, and a distribution rate of around 6.92% as of late 2024.
Launched through an initial public offering on August 27, 2010, and originally named BlackRock Build America Bond Trust, the fund amended its investment policy and name in 2015 to broaden its focus beyond expired Build America Bonds to taxable municipal securities generally, following the program's end in 2010. Headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware, at 100 Bellevue Parkway, with principal oversight from BlackRock's New York operations, the Trust operates in the U.S. fixed income markets, targeting income-oriented investors through monthly distributions on the New York Stock Exchange.
In July 2025, the Trust announced a 6.14% increase to its monthly distribution rate to $0.09860 per share, driven by higher fund earnings and representing an annual rate of approximately 7% of net asset value, with the enhanced payout commencing in August 2025. Recent distributions include a December 2025 declaration of $0.0986 per share, payable on December 31 to shareholders of record on December 22, alongside ongoing portfolio management by a team including Michael Kalinoski, Kevin Maloney, Walter O'Connor, Kristi Manidis, Christian Romaglino, and Phillip Soccio. The fund maintains 204-218 holdings, managed assets of about $1.62 billion, and a gross expense ratio of 3.42%, reflecting 34% leverage as of mid-2025.
