Business
Barclays PLC is a multinational financial services company headquartered in London, United Kingdom, operating primarily through two segments: Barclays UK and Barclays International. The company offers a broad spectrum of financial products and services, including personal and business retail banking with current and savings accounts, mortgages, personal loans, and credit cards; corporate banking comprising lending solutions, treasury services, and cash management tailored for small to large enterprises; investment banking services such as merger and acquisition advisory, financing, risk management, and securities trading; wealth management and investment advisory services for individual and institutional clients; and payment processing and market banking including specialized financing, portfolio management, and trading across stock, interest rate, foreign exchange, and commodity markets. Barclays owns and operates an extensive branch network globally, including 224 branches worldwide as of end-2024, and manages significant assets with GBP 547.5 billion in deposits and GBP 337.9 billion in loans under management. Its operations span the United Kingdom, Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Barclays was founded in 1690 and formally incorporated as Barclays PLC in 1985. It serves a broad client base across retail, corporate, and institutional segments with a strong emphasis on digital banking innovation, having developed comprehensive online and mobile banking platforms alongside initiatives in blockchain technology and open banking to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency. Significant recent developments include a major restructuring announced in early 2024, aimed at simplifying the business into a more balanced and focused organization with five core divisions to improve operational performance and shareholder returns. This strategic transformation includes concentrating on growing the consumer and lending businesses, exemplified by Barclays' acquisition of Tesco's retail banking operations, and repositioning its investment bank to reduce risk-weighted assets with a target return on tangible equity above 12% by 2026. Barclays also launched a £1 billion share buyback program in early 2025 while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability by pledging to become a net-zero bank by 2050 and ceasing financing for new upstream oil and gas projects starting in 2024, alongside investing up to £500 million in climate technology ventures by 2028. The company continues to expand its digital service offerings, including Plan & Invest, a digital investment solution, and migrates critical infrastructure to the cloud to advance resilience and efficiency. Barclays employs around 93,000 people and generates revenue predominantly from the UK (52%), Americas (32.7%), and Europe (10.2%). Its key products include retail banking, credit card issuance under the Barclaycard brand, corporate lending, investment banking advisory and underwriting, wealth and asset management, and comprehensive payment and transaction services globally. The company maintains a strong presence in capital markets and acts as a primary dealer in government securities in the UK, US, and selected European countries, supporting a diverse range of clients from individual consumers to multinational corporations and government entities. Barclays continuously enhances its product portfolio through innovation and strategic partnerships to maintain competitive advantage in the global financial services industry.
