BlackRock Future Innovators ETF (BFTR) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing at least 80% of its net assets in equity securities of small- and mid-capitalization growth companies deemed innovative by BlackRock Fund Advisors (BFA). The fund targets companies that have introduced, or seek to introduce, new products or services with potential to change their marketplaces; these span sectors such as technology services, electronic technology, producer manufacturing, health technology, finance, consumer services, and transportation. It primarily holds common stocks but may include preferred stocks, convertible securities, warrants, depositary receipts, and shares acquired through initial public offerings (IPOs); up to 25% of assets may be allocated to foreign securities, including those from emerging markets.
BFTR employs a proprietary selection process based on BFA's internal research to identify firms capitalizing on or enabling innovation, generally focusing on market capitalizations comparable to the Russell 2500 Growth Index (approximately $50.71 million to $20.70 billion as of inception). The fund maintains a non-diversified portfolio with around 64 holdings, where the top 10 positions typically represent about 30.50% of assets; geographic exposure is primarily North American (over 93%, mainly U.S.-based at 89%), with minor allocations to Europe, Asia Pacific, and other regions.
Launched on September 29, 2020, and listed on NYSE Arca, BFTR is part of BlackRock ETF Trust and managed from BlackRock's headquarters in New York City.
In a significant operational change, BlackRock ETF Trust announced the closure and liquidation of BFTR on August 18, 2023, with trading ceasing after market close on October 30, 2023, and proceeds distributed to shareholders on November 2, 2023, due to limited investor demand and assets.
