Banco Espírito Santo Banco Espírito Santo, S.A. (BKESF), founded in 1869 and headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal, previously operated as a major Portuguese bank providing a comprehensive range of financial products and services through six segments including domestic commercial banking with retail, corporate, institutional, and private banking; international commercial banking; investment banking; asset management; markets and strategic investments; and corporate center; encompassing deposits, credit and debit cards, savings accounts, loans, investment banking and brokerage, custodian services, investment funds management, as well as life and non-life insurance products primarily targeting individual, corporate, and institutional customers in Portugal and select international markets such as Switzerland, France, UAE, Angola, Brazil, and the United States via subsidiaries. The bank historically expanded through mergers like the 1937 combination with Banco Comercial de Lisboa and name change to Banco Espírito Santo, S.A. in 1999 from Banco Espírito Santo e Comercial de Lisboa. Following its 2014 collapse amid the eurozone crisis, authorities resolved the institution by carving out healthy assets into Novo Banco while placing Banco Espírito Santo into liquidation to wind down non-performing assets and liabilities; it presently employs a minimal staff of four and focuses solely on liquidation processes with no active banking operations.
