Business
Barnes & Noble Education, Inc. (NYSE: BNED) operates as a leading provider of educational products, services, and solutions to higher education and K-12 institutions across the United States; it manages physical and virtual campus bookstores, offers wholesale textbook distribution, and delivers digital learning platforms serving over 5 million students and faculty annually. The company provides core products and services including First Day Complete and First Day Inclusive Access programs for affordable print and digital course materials; Bartleby subscription-based tools for homework help, writing, and math support; campus retail solutions encompassing new, used, rental textbooks, general merchandise, apparel, and emblematic products; wholesale capabilities through MBS Textbook Exchange with large-scale sourcing of used and digital materials; and store technology services supported by centralized distribution. Headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, BNED traces its origins to 1965 when Leonard Riggio founded the Student Book Exchange, evolving through campus store expansions and spinning off as an independent public company from Barnes & Noble, Inc. in 2015 to focus on the education sector. Recent developments include the successful completion in June 2024 of milestone equity and refinancing transactions led by Immersion Corporation, injecting over $100 million in new capital, converting debt to equity, and extending its asset-based loan facility to bolster financial flexibility amid a 1-for-100 reverse stock split; accelerated expansion with over 20 new campus store partnerships announced in May 2025 for the 2025-2026 academic year across 17 states including Villanova University, Georgia Southern University, and University of Denver, more than doubling prior growth rates with over half adopting First Day Complete; and the launch of Campus to Career, a new offering to aid student transitions to the workforce. BNED continues to prioritize digital transformation, operational efficiencies, and partnerships to drive student affordability, access, and institutional success nationwide.
