Business
Southern Peru Copper Corporation, Sucursal del Peru is an integrated mining and metallurgical enterprise engaged in the exploration, extraction, concentration, smelting, and refining of non-ferrous mineral resources, primarily copper and related mineral by-products. The company manufactures and distributes an extensive portfolio of mineral and chemical products, including high-purity refined copper cathodes produced via electro-refining and solvent extraction electrowinning processes; copper concentrates; copper anodes and blister copper; copper rod and drawing stock; molybdenum concentrates; commercial-grade sulfuric acid; refined silver ingots; gold precipitates; and zinc concentrates. In addition to base metal extraction and production, the company provides industrial metallurgical services, custom smelting and refining processing, and specialized logistics support through proprietary railway and marine terminal facilities. The company conducts its core extraction and processing operations across southern Peru, centered on the Toquepala open-pit mine and concentrator in the Tacna region, the Cuajone open-pit mine and concentrator in the Moquegua region, and an integrated metallurgical complex in Ilo, Moquegua, which houses an industrial copper smelter, an electrolytic copper refinery, precious metals recovery units, sulfuric acid plants, and deep-water port infrastructure. Established in 1954 and headquartered in Lima, Peru, the branch operates as the Peruvian arm of Southern Copper Corporation, a majority-owned subsidiary of Americas Mining Corporation within the industrial conglomerate Grupo Mexico S.A.B. de C.V., and trades publicly on the Lima Stock Exchange under the ticker SPCCPI1. In recent operational developments and capital expenditures, the company reactivated full construction activities at its 1.8 billion dollar Tia Maria greenfield copper project in the Arequipa region following updated regulatory and exploitation approvals, advancing civil earthworks, reverse osmosis seawater desalination systems, and extraction-electrowinning plant fabrication targeted for commercial operations by 2027 to 2028 with an anticipated annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes of copper cathodes. Additionally, the company is advancing pre-feasibility and environmental evaluations for its large-scale Los Chancas project in Apurimac and Michiquillay project in Cajamarca, while undertaking capacity modernization programs at the Ilo metallurgical complex and deploying autonomous haulage systems and digital fleet automation across its operating pits.
