Business
Cerus Corporation (Nasdaq: CERS), headquartered in Concord, California and founded in 1991, develops and commercializes the INTERCEPT Blood System, a pathogen reduction technology designed to safeguard platelet, plasma and cryoprecipitate blood components against bacterial contamination, viruses and other pathogens for transfusion to patients; the system employs a photochemical treatment process using amotosalen and ultraviolet A light illumination, followed by the use of the INTERCEPT processing sets and accessories including platelet and plasma containers, illumination devices, and transfer sets. Core products include the INTERCEPT Blood System for platelets and plasma, approved by the FDA and bearing CE mark in Europe and available in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Latin America and other international markets through direct sales forces and distributors; the INTERCEPT Blood System for Cryoprecipitation, which produces Pathogen Reduced Cryoprecipitated Fibrinogen Complex (INTERCEPT Fibrinogen Complex or IFC) approved in the US for treating bleeding associated with fibrinogen deficiency including massive hemorrhage; and the INTERCEPT Blood System for red blood cells, currently in late-stage clinical development. The company also offers implementation, training, technical support and maintenance services to facilitate adoption by blood centers and hospitals; it targets healthcare providers such as blood collection organizations, hospitals and ultimately patients reliant on safe transfusions within the biotechnology and medical devices sectors focused on transfusion medicine and blood safety. Recent developments include record third quarter 2025 results with raised full-year 2025 product revenue guidance driven by strong North American platelet growth, IFC business expansion and increased production capacity; an extended supply agreement with Porex Corporation effective January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2027 for platelet wafers and plasma disks ensuring supply chain stability with fixed pricing for the first two years; plans to launch an LED illuminator in Europe in 2025 and the US in 2026; a $248 million BARDA contract to advance the INTERCEPT red blood cell program; and a formal recommendation from the German National Blood Advisory Committee for enhancing platelet transfusion safety using pathogen reduction.
