Business
ACT Energy Technologies Ltd., formerly known as Cathedral Energy Services Ltd., provides high-performance directional drilling services and related downhole technologies to oil and natural gas exploration and development companies across North America. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the company operates principally in western Canada, including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, as well as key U.S. basins such as the Permian; its main operating brands include Altitude Energy Partners for directional drilling in both countries, Discovery Downhole Services, and Rime Downhole Technologies. Core offerings encompass remote directional drilling and measurement-while-drilling (MWD) systems including the proprietary FUSION MWD platform and automated gamma services; drilling optimization and well planning; rotary steerable systems; high-performance mud motors such as nDURANCE; motor rentals; equipment sales and rentals; real-time operations centers for continuous monitoring and collaboration; and downhole tool maintenance, training, and repair services. In July 2024, the company completed a significant rebranding from Cathedral Energy Services Ltd. to ACT Energy Technologies Ltd., accompanied by a one-for-seven share consolidation and the unification of Canadian operations under the Altitude Energy Partners brand to streamline its North American directional drilling footprint; this followed a series of eight acquisitions since 2021, including Altitude Energy Partners in 2022 for US$100 million to expand U.S. presence in Texas, the Canadian directional business of Ensign Energy Services Inc. with a strategic alliance, Compass Directional Services Ltd., Valiant Energy Services, and Lexa Drilling Technologies to enhance technology leadership and market consolidation. These strategic moves, coupled with ongoing investments in proprietary tools, in-house engineering, and facilities in Calgary, Nisku (Alberta), and Houston (Texas), position ACT as one of North America's largest independent directional drilling providers focused on efficiency, reliability, and customized solutions for onshore producers.
