Business
Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK), founded in 1989 and headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, operates as an independent exploration and production company focused on the acquisition, exploration, and development of onshore properties for natural gas, oil, and natural gas liquids (NGLs) primarily in the Marcellus Shale (Pennsylvania and West Virginia), Haynesville Shale (Louisiana), and legacy Eagle Ford Shale assets; the company produces approximately 2,745 million cubic feet equivalent per day across these basins, with key operations involving horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and marketing services delivered to domestic and LNG export markets. In October 2024, Chesapeake completed its $7.4 billion all-stock merger with Southwestern Energy, rebranding the combined entity as Expand Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: EXE) to form the largest U.S. natural gas producer with enhanced scale across 1.83 million net acres in Appalachia and Haynesville, targeting 7.0 billion cubic feet equivalent per day production in 2025, $2.6-2.7 billion in capital expenditures on 11 rigs, and $500 million in annual synergies by 2027; this follows 2023 divestitures of Eagle Ford assets for $3.5 billion to INEOS Energy, WildFire Energy, and SilverBow Resources, alongside quarterly dividends of $0.575-$0.715 per share and a commitment to net-zero Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2035. Geographically, Chesapeake maintains core assets in the northern Appalachian Basin (Pennsylvania), southwest Appalachia (Ohio, West Virginia), and Haynesville/Bossier Shales (Louisiana), serving utility, industrial, and export customers with responsibly sourced gas certified under MiQ and EO100 standards; post-merger under Expand Energy, operations emphasize LNG-ready production, capital discipline, and community engagement in these regions.
