Business
Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) operates railway transportation services in central Japan, primarily managing the Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed rail line connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka via Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama trains; conventional rail lines in the Tokai region including the Tokaido Main Line, Iida Line, and others serving Nagoya, Shizuoka, and surrounding areas; and bus services. The company, established in 1987 and headquartered at JR Central Towers in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan, also conducts distribution activities through department stores in JR Central Towers and station merchandising; real estate operations involving leasing and sales of station buildings and properties; and other businesses such as hotels, travel agencies, advertising, railroad car manufacturing, and construction. JR Central maintains 405 stations across 1,970.8 kilometers of track, with international offices in Washington D.C., London, and Sydney, targeting passengers, regional commuters, tourists, and commercial clients throughout Japan. In recent developments, JR Central expanded its treasury stock repurchase program and announced cancellations in October 2025, alongside releasing consolidated financial results for the six months ended September 30, 2025. The company partnered with Hilton to rebrand and reopen Hilton Takayama Resort in fall 2026, signed a memorandum of cooperation with Renfe Proyectos Internacionales S.M.E., S.A. in April 2025, and launched the "Wonderful Dreams Shinkansen" special Tokaido Shinkansen train in February 2025. Additional initiatives include a regional revitalization project at Lake Hamana in June 2025, introduction of private booths on Tokaido Shinkansen trains, development of hydrogen-powered train technologies and a wheel shape measuring device, issuance of green bonds, and promotion of digital transformation through acquisition of shares in ADDIX, Inc.
