Business
Clean Harbors, Inc. provides environmental and industrial services throughout North America, specializing in the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste; emergency spill response; industrial cleaning and maintenance; parts cleaning; used oil re-refining and recycling; and production of lubricants and related products through its Safety-Kleen Sustainability Solutions segment. The company operates over 870 locations across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, including more than 100 waste disposal facilities such as incinerators, seven hazardous waste landfills, two non-hazardous waste landfills, and treatment, storage, and disposal facilities. Founded in 1980 and headquartered in Norwell, Massachusetts, Clean Harbors serves diverse industries including chemicals, manufacturing, refineries, automotive, utilities, oil and gas, transportation, government, and retail. The company's core offerings encompass comprehensive waste management solutions; field services like tank cleaning, hydro excavation, and decontamination; recycling services for solvents, oil filters, and wastewater; and specialty modules for PFAS remediation and water filtration. Its Environmental Services segment handles end-to-end hazardous waste management and technical services, while Safety-Kleen provides closed-loop parts washers, bulk solvent collection, and high-quality re-refined oils such as Kleen branded products. In recent developments, Clean Harbors acquired HEPACO for $400 million in March 2024, enhancing its environmental and emergency response capabilities, particularly in field services, rail assets, and the Eastern U.S. with projected $20 million in annual cost synergies. The company secured $110 million in contracts in December 2025 for PFAS water filtration systems at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, partnering with V2X to expand regenerative carbon and resin technologies operational since 2022. Additionally, Clean Harbors plans a $210 million state-of-the-art processing plant using solvent de-asphalting technology to convert re-refining byproducts into high-value base oils, targeting commercial launch in 2028 with a six-to-seven-year payback, alongside ramping up its Kimball incinerator to process 28,000 tons in 2025 for $10 million in EBITDA contribution.
