Business
Covestro AG manufactures high-quality polymer materials and components, primarily polyurethanes, polycarbonates, and precursors for coatings and adhesives. The company operates through two main segments, Performance Materials and Solutions & Specialties; Performance Materials produces polyurethanes including diphenylmethane diisocyanate, toluylene diisocyanate, and long-chain polyols, as well as polycarbonates and base chemicals for applications in furniture, construction, automotive, transportation, insulation, mattresses, and car seats; Solutions & Specialties offers engineering plastics, thermoplastic polyurethanes, specialty films, elastomers, tailored urethanes, and composite resins serving automotive, electrical and electronics, household appliances, healthcare, solar panels, electric vehicle batteries, and logistics industries. Covestro serves customers globally through trading houses and distributors across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, the United States, Canada, and China, with a focus on mobility, building and living, electrical and electronics, sports and leisure, telecommunications, healthcare, and cosmetics sectors. Founded in 2015 as a spin-off from Bayer AG's MaterialScience division and headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany, the company generated EUR 14.2 billion in sales in fiscal 2024 from 46 production sites and approximately 17,500 employees. Recent developments include the acquisition of Pontacol in June 2025 to expand specialty films, expansion of specialty isocyanate production with two former Vencorex sites in the US and Thailand in August 2025, and in November 2025, receipt of final regulatory approval including German Foreign Investment Control for a strategic partnership with XRG P.J.S.C. (formerly ADNOC), expected to close shortly with a EUR 1.17 billion capital infusion to advance the Sustainable Future strategy emphasizing circularity, innovation, digital transformation, and growth in high-value sectors while retaining operational autonomy and German governance.
