Business
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (NYSE: CRL) provides essential drug discovery, non-clinical development, safety assessment, and manufacturing solutions to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries worldwide. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Wilmington, Massachusetts, the company operates through three primary segments: Research Models and Services (RMS), which supplies research animal models including genetically modified rodents, preconditioned animals, and related services such as genetic monitoring and vivarium management; Discovery and Safety Assessment (DSA), which delivers early-stage discovery studies for target identification, compound validation, in vivo pharmacology, and comprehensive safety testing encompassing toxicology, pathology, bioanalysis, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and safety pharmacology; and Manufacturing Solutions, which offers in vitro quality control testing for sterile and non-sterile pharmaceuticals and consumer products, specialized biologics testing, avian vaccine services including specific-pathogen-free eggs and chickens, and microbial solutions for endotoxin detection. With facilities spanning the United States, Europe, Canada, Asia Pacific, and other international regions, Charles River supports clients from concept to commercialization, including advanced modalities like cell and gene therapies through its integrated CDMO capabilities. Recent developments include a strategic exploration of collaboration with BioTech Social announced in late 2024 to integrate crowdfunding via the BioTech Funding Portal into its Charles River Incubator Program (CIP) and Cell and Gene Therapy Accelerator Program (CAP), both launched in 2024 to provide regulatory expertise, lab space, and funding pathways for early-stage developers; a $13 million expansion of its microbial solutions facility in Charleston County, South Carolina, in August 2025 to enhance quality control testing capacity; alliances with the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy and Children's Hospital Los Angeles in 2025 to advance oncology manufacturing and Phase I clinical trial materials for pediatric solid tumors; renewal of its partnership with the CHDI Foundation to bolster Huntington's disease research; and ongoing portfolio enhancements in plasmid DNA, viral vectors, and cell therapy services to meet rising demand in advanced therapies.
