- Cargills (Ceylon) PLC is a Sri Lanka-based diversified conglomerate primarily engaged in food retail, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing and distribution, restaurant operations, and commercial real estate development. Founded in 1844 and headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the company operates as a subsidiary of C T Holdings PLC. Cargills (Ceylon) operates an extensive nationwide supply chain, manufacturing, and distribution infrastructure serving mass-market consumers, institutional buyers, and commercial food service clients across all provinces of Sri Lanka.
The company operates through four principal business segments: Retail, Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), Restaurants, and Real Estate. The Retail segment manages an island-wide modern trade retail network comprising Cargills Food City supermarkets, Cargills Express convenience stores, Food Hall gourmet outlets, and the Cargills Online digital grocery and delivery platform. The FMCG segment manufactures, processes, and distributes consumer food and beverage products, including dairy items such as fresh milk, ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk, yogurt, butter, and cheese under the Kotmale brand; ice creams and frozen novelties under the Cargills Magic brand; processed meats such as sausages, meatballs, bacon, ham, and deli cuts under the Goldi, Sam's, and Cargills Finest brands; fruit juices, cordials, jams, sauces, culinary condiments, biscuits, and confectionery under the Kist brand; and beverages under the RIDE brand. The Restaurants segment operates quick-service restaurant chains across Sri Lanka, holding the primary master franchise for KFC. The Real Estate segment develops, owns, and manages commercial shopping malls and entertainment complexes under the Cargills Square brand. Additionally, the company provides agricultural support services, including agricultural seed production, agritech extension services, cold-chain logistics, and island-wide direct farm-gate collection for fresh produce and dairy.
In recent developments, Cargills (Ceylon) has accelerated the expansion of its retail store footprint, restaurant network, and Cargills Square commercial mall presence across suburban and regional markets in Sri Lanka following macroeconomic stabilization. In 2024, the company commissioned a modern Rs. 550 million meat processing facility through its subsidiary, Cargills Convenient Foods Limited, expanding production capacities for its processed meat brands including Goldi, Sam's, and Cargills Finest. The group has also implemented major digitalization initiatives across its agricultural and dairy supply chain networks, deploying technology solutions to streamline direct farmer procurement, tracking, and settlement for thousands of local smallholder farmers. Furthermore, Cargills has continued to expand its FMCG portfolio with new value-added dairy, culinary, and beverage product lines, alongside expanding omnichannel fulfilment capabilities via its Cargills Online e-commerce division.
