Founded in 1870 as a produce and exchange brokerage firm, the company is headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and serves retail consumers, corporate clients, institutional investors, and international travelers across Sri Lanka, the Maldives, India, the Middle East, and Europe. The company organizes its business activities into several core industry sectors: Transportation: provision of container terminal handling, port operations, and marine bunkering through South Asia Gateway Terminals and Colombo West International Terminal; international freight forwarding, logistics, warehousing, cold-chain distribution, and cargo management through joint ventures and dedicated logistics arms; and airline passenger and cargo general sales agency representation. Leisure: ownership, asset management, and operation of luxury beachfront resorts, urban business hotels, and safari lodges across Sri Lanka and the Maldives under the Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts brand; inbound tour operations, ground handling, and destination management services through Walkers Tours and Whittall Boustead Travel; and integrated resort hospitality management. Consumer Foods: manufacturing, bottling, marketing, and distribution of carbonated soft drinks, fruit juices, flavored dairy beverages, packaged water, and frozen confectionery under the Elephant House brand through Ceylon Cold Stores PLC; and production and processing of sausages, meatballs, cured meats, and ready-to-eat convenience foods under the Keells Krest and Elephant House brands through Keells Food Products PLC. Retail: operation of a nationwide modern-trade supermarket chain under the Keells banner, retailing fresh produce, dairy, bakery items, packaged groceries, beverages, household supplies, and personal care goods, supported by centralized distribution centers and omnichannel e-commerce platforms. Property and Real Estate: investment, master development, sales, and leasing of commercial office complexes, residential condominiums, retail malls, and mixed-use urban lifestyle developments, including the landmark City of Dreams Sri Lanka complex, the TRI-ZEN smart apartment development, and Victoria Golf Resort. Financial Services: provision of life insurance policies, investment-linked products, and pension solutions through Union Assurance PLC; commercial banking, retail lending, SME financing, treasury operations, credit card issuance, and trade finance through associate Nations Trust Bank PLC; as well as investment banking, equity research, asset management, and stockbroking services through John Keells Stock Brokers. Information Technology and Plantation Services: enterprise resource planning implementation, digital transformation consulting, cloud engineering, customer experience management, and software solutions through John Keells Information Technology; along with tea broking, rubber marketing, and agricultural warehousing services through John Keells PLC. In recent strategic developments, John Keells Holdings completed and unveiled the City of Dreams Sri Lanka integrated resort, a landmark USD 1.2 billion mixed-use development in Colombo developed through subsidiary Waterfront Properties (Private) Limited in strategic partnership with Melco Resorts & Entertainment, encompassing the Cinnamon Life hotel, the ultra-luxury Nuwa hotel, extensive conference and exhibition facilities, retail spaces, and gaming operations managed under a 20-year license. In the transportation sector, the group, in consortium with Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, commenced initial operations and advanced subsequent construction phases at the Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), backed by a USD 553 million financing package from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. In consumer foods, the group entered a strategic manufacturing and distribution partnership with Reliance Consumer Products Limited to expand the footprint of the Elephant House beverage brand across India. To support project capital requirements and optimize its capital structure, the company completed a Rs. 27.43 billion rights issue in 2024 followed by a 1-for-10 share sub-division to enhance market liquidity, while divesting its non-core shareholding in Tea Smallholder Factories PLC as part of ongoing portfolio rationalization.
