Business
Kahawatte Plantations PLC is a Sri Lanka-based agribusiness enterprise primarily engaged in the cultivation, processing, manufacturing, and marketing of tea, rubber, and diversified agricultural crops. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Peliyagoda, Sri Lanka, the company operates as a subsidiary of Forbes Plantations (Pvt) Ltd within the MJF Group, the parent conglomerate of the Dilmah Ceylon tea brand. The company manages over 12,000 hectares of agricultural land distributed across the Nawalapitiya region in the Central Highlands and the Sabaragamuwa region in southwestern Sri Lanka, operating multiple manufacturing facilities, processing centers, and estate bungalows. The company's core product and service portfolio encompasses: tea products, including premium orthodox black tea, curly and leafy specialty teas, CTC teas, and single-estate Ceylon tea grades produced in proprietary estate factories; natural rubber products, including latex crepe, sole crepe, centrifuged latex, ribbed smoked sheets, and scrap rubber for industrial manufacturing and export; diversified agricultural crops and spices, including GlobalG.A.P.-certified Ceylon cinnamon, specialty Arabica and Robusta coffee, black pepper, coconut, macadamia nuts, and tropical fruits; commercial forestry assets, including sustainably managed Eucalyptus, Albizia, and commercial timber stands; agro-tourism and hospitality services, offering heritage plantation bungalow accommodations and guided estate excursions; and renewable energy generation, comprising grid-connected rooftop and ground-mounted solar photovoltaic systems and run-of-river mini-hydro power installations. In recent developments, Kahawatte Plantations PLC has accelerated its strategic transition toward value-added crop diversification, operational modernization, and environmental sustainability. The company commissioned a 120 million Sri Lankan rupee solar photovoltaic project at its Imboolpittia Estate, developed in collaboration with and co-funded by the MJF Charitable Foundation to supply renewable electricity to the national grid and offset factory power costs. In its crop diversification segment, the company expanded its high-density cinnamon cultivation beyond 330 hectares, becoming the first regional plantation company in Sri Lanka to attain GlobalG.A.P. certification for cinnamon production, while simultaneously expanding commercial plantings of coffee, macadamia, and pepper. To enhance soil fertility and advance climate resilience, the company introduced localized biochar production facilities across its estates and deepened its environmental conservation programs, notably expanding the Endana Biodiversity Corridor to reconnect fragmented rainforest ecosystems. Corporately, the company aligned its operations under the leadership of Chairman Dilhan C. Fernando following executive succession at the MJF Group, altered its financial year-end to March 31 to synchronize with the parent group's reporting cycle, and strengthened supply-chain integration with Dilmah's international value-added tea and botanical product distribution networks.
