Business
Canadian Solar Inc. is a leading manufacturer of solar photovoltaic modules, provider of solar energy and battery energy storage solutions, and developer of utility-scale solar power and battery energy storage projects. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Shawn Qu and headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, the company operates through two primary segments: CSI Solar, which designs, develops, and manufactures solar ingots, wafers, cells, modules, inverters, solar system kits, and engineering, procurement, and construction services; and Recurrent Energy, which focuses on greenfield origination, development, financing, execution, operations, maintenance, and asset management of solar and storage projects. Its product portfolio includes high-efficiency TOPCon and HJT solar PV modules for residential, commercial & industrial, and utility-scale applications; turnkey battery storage systems for utilities, independent power producers, and residential customers; and integrated solar energy solutions such as system kits with mounting and inverters, supported by 25-30 year warranties. The company serves customers in more than 160 countries across six continents, with subsidiaries in 23 countries and regions, over 20 manufacturing facilities in Asia and the Americas, cumulative solar module shipments of 170GW, battery storage shipments of 15.7GWh, and a geographically diversified project pipeline exceeding 25GWp solar and 80GWh storage. Recent developments include the opening of a new and expanded global headquarters in Kitchener, Ontario in January 2025, consolidating corporate functions and subsidiaries like e-STORAGE; the April 2025 acquisition by subsidiary CSI Solar Co., Ltd. of U.S.-based Endurans Solar to enhance module performance and reduce manufacturing costs; a planned $200 million convertible notes issuance to investment firm PAG in late 2024 for capital optimization, debt repayment, and solar project investments; and in November 2025, the formation of joint venture CS PowerTech with CSI Solar Co., through which Canadian Solar will acquire a controlling 75.1% stake and related overseas facilities valued at $50 million to bolster U.S. manufacturing of solar panels and energy storage systems, alongside a new 6GWh battery facility under construction in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
