Business
Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE: DUK), headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina and founded in 1904, operates as one of the largest energy holding companies in the United States, providing regulated electric power generation, transmission and distribution services; natural gas distribution; and commercial renewable energy solutions to approximately 8.4 million electric customers and 1.7 million natural gas customers across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The company owns and operates a diverse generation portfolio of approximately 54,800 megawatts, encompassing nuclear power plants including Catawba, McGuire, Oconee, Shearon Harris, H.B. Robinson and Brunswick; coal-fired facilities such as Allen Steam Station, Belews Creek and Roxboro; natural gas-fired plants including Hines Energy Complex and Smith Energy Complex; hydroelectric facilities like Cowans Ford, Keowee and Bad Creek pumped-storage; solar farms such as Hamilton Solar Power Plant and Davidson County Solar Farm; wind projects including Los Vientos Wind Farm; and energy storage systems. Duke Energy serves residential, commercial, industrial and wholesale customers through subsidiaries including Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, Duke Energy Florida, Duke Energy Indiana, Duke Energy Ohio, Duke Energy Kentucky, Duke Energy Renewables and Piedmont Natural Gas; it also offers energy infrastructure solutions via Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. In recent developments, Duke Energy acquired 11 natural gas turbines from GE Vernova in 2025 to support data center and manufacturing demand growth, adding to eight prior units and aligning with an expanded $87 billion five-year capital plan; partnered with Brookfield to secure investment in Duke Energy Florida and facilitate infrastructure expansion; and announced the $2.48 billion sale of its Tennessee Piedmont Natural Gas business to Spire in July 2025 to fund accelerating investments amid record customer growth. The company continues executing a clean energy transition, targeting net-zero methane emissions from natural gas by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions from electric generation by 2050, with investments in grid upgrades, renewables, natural gas, nuclear and battery storage. Duke Energy ranks 141st on the 2024 Fortune 500 list, employing around 27,000 people and maintaining a service territory spanning 104,000 square miles.
