Business
Fortescue Ltd is a global metals and energy company primarily engaged in the exploration, development, production, processing, and sale of iron ore. The company operates extensive mining operations predominantly in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, including the Chichester and Solomon Hubs. Fortescue manufactures and sells iron ore products primarily catering to markets in Australia, China, and internationally. Alongside its core iron ore business, Fortescue has expanded into renewable energy and green technology sectors through its subsidiary Fortescue Energy (formerly Fortescue Future Industries), which focuses on the development of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and renewable power projects globally. Fortescue’s product and service offerings include iron ore mining and processing; development and commercialization of green hydrogen and renewable energy solutions; production and deployment of zero-emission mining equipment; and the manufacture and operation of autonomous battery-electric trucks and zero emissions mining fleets. In recent major developments, Fortescue has signed a landmark $2.8 billion partnership with German-Swiss equipment manufacturer Liebherr to supply 475 zero-emission mining machines, including 360 autonomous battery-electric trucks, 55 electric excavators, and 60 battery-powered dozers. This deal, the largest in Liebherr’s 75-year history, aims to decarbonize Fortescue’s mining operations by replacing two-thirds of its diesel-powered fleet with zero-emission vehicles by 2030. Additionally, Fortescue has entered a strategic joint venture with Morocco's OCP Group to develop a green energy hub supplying green hydrogen, ammonia, and fertilizer for regional and global markets. The company is also expanding its green mining equipment fleet through a separate agreement with Chinese manufacturer XCMG to purchase over 100 battery-electric heavy mobile mining machines. Fortescue continues its global renewable energy expansion by acquiring Spanish renewable wind technology company Nabrawind to boost wind energy capabilities. These initiatives underline Fortescue’s strategic shift towards accelerating the commercial decarbonization of industry through technology, energy, and metals on a global scale. Founded in 2003 and headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, Fortescue operates as one of the world’s largest producers of iron ore and is recognized as a leader in mining industry decarbonization and green energy solutions. The company employs over 13,000 people and maintains extensive tenements in Australia, alongside expanding international green energy projects in regions such as the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe. Fortescue’s strategic focus combines its core iron ore mining operations with pioneering renewable energy development, including hydrogen production, green ammonia, and zero-emission mining technologies, positioning the company as a key player in the transition towards sustainable resource extraction and energy production worldwide.
