Business
GlaxoSmithKline S.A.E. is an Egypt-based pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare company that develops, produces, markets, imports, and distributes prescription pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines. Operating as a subsidiary of the British multinational biopharmaceutical group GSK plc, the company serves retail pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, and government healthcare institutions across Egypt, as well as select export markets in the Middle East and North Africa. The company operates through two primary business segments: General Medicines and Specialty Medicines & Vaccines. Its product portfolio encompasses anti-infective treatments, including amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium formulations marketed under the Augmentin and Amoxil brands, and cefuroxime axetil under the Zinnat brand; respiratory therapies, including salbutamol sulfate inhalers and syrups under the Ventolin brand, fluticasone propionate under the Flixotide brand, and fluticasone/salmeterol combinations under the Seretide brand; central nervous system treatments, including paroxetine under the Seroxat brand and lamotrigine under the Lamictal brand; dermatology formulations, including topical corticosteroids under the Betnovate and Dermovate brands; cardiovascular, metabolic, and gastrointestinal medications; and pediatric and adult vaccines, including immunizations against rotavirus under the Rotarix brand, pneumococcal disease under the Synflorix brand, human papillomavirus under the Cervarix brand, and combination vaccines under the Infanrix brand. Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, the company operates major manufacturing, packaging, and quality-control facilities located in El Salam City and Giza. In recent operational developments, GlaxoSmithKline S.A.E. completed strategic realignments following the global separation of GSK's consumer healthcare business, focusing its operational model exclusively on innovative biopharmaceuticals and specialized vaccines. Additionally, the company has executed capital expenditure programs to modernize and expand production lines at its El Salam City plant, enhancing local manufacturing capacity for critical respiratory therapies and antibiotic formulations to support national drug supply stability and meet volume commitments under long-term supply agreements with the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement. The company also continues to pursue localization and technology-transfer initiatives to introduce advanced biologic therapies into the domestic Egyptian market.
