Business
Fairchild Semiconductor International, Inc. (FCS) develops, manufactures and markets power analog and discrete semiconductors; non-power semiconductor solutions; and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-based products for end markets including industrial, automotive, home appliances, mobile, server and cloud computing, lighting, and consumer electronics. The company offers switching power solutions through its SPS segment, analog power and signal solutions via the APSS segment, and standard products including discretes, rectifiers, diodes, MOSFETs, optocouplers, optoelectronics, SuperFET power MOSFETs, IGBTs, linear regulators, DC/DC converters, PFC and PWM controllers, battery management ICs, data converters, video ICs, LDOs, supervisory circuits, motor ICs, amplifiers, microcontrollers, and interface/logic products; it operates an eight-inch wafer fabrication facility in Bucheon, South Korea, with additional manufacturing and assembly in the United States, Philippines, Malaysia, and China. Founded in 1957 in Santa Clara, California, as a division of Fairchild Camera and Instrument by the "traitorous eight" engineers from Shockley Semiconductor, the company pioneered silicon transistors, the planar process, and integrated circuits, with historical headquarters in San Jose and Sunnyvale, California, and key facilities in South Portland, Maine; Mountaintop, Pennsylvania; West Jordan, Utah; and international sites. Fairchild went public on NASDAQ under ticker FCS in 1999 following its spin-off from National Semiconductor, pursued growth through acquisitions including Raytheon's semiconductor division in 1997, Samsung's power business in 1999, Intersil's discrete power unit in 2001, Impala Linear in 2001, and TranSiC in 2011, and completed its acquisition by ON Semiconductor in September 2016 for $2.4 billion in cash, after which FCS shares ceased active trading, operations integrated into onsemi systems by late 2017 including order fulfillment migration and closure of the West Jordan plant, and the standalone entity now operates as a legacy brand within onsemi's power management portfolio.
