Business
FREYR Battery, now operating as T1 Energy Inc. (NYSE: TE), develops and manufactures advanced energy storage and solar solutions with a focus on building an integrated U.S. supply chain for solar modules, solar cells, and battery storage systems; it produces photovoltaic solar modules utilizing next-generation industrial-scale PV technology featuring n-type TOPCon cells with silicon nitride anti-reflective coatings, atomic-layer alumina passivation, tunnel oxide layers, and silver/aluminum busbars for utility-scale, commercial and industrial, and residential markets; core battery offerings include high-density lithium-ion cells based on 24M SemiSolid technology, lithium iron phosphate (LFP), and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistries for electric vehicles, stationary energy storage systems, marine applications, and aviation. Founded in 2018 and originally headquartered in Mo i Rana, Norway, the company maintains European assets while shifting its global headquarters to Austin, Texas, in early 2025 to align with U.S. operations, including the G1 Dallas 5 GW solar module facility in Wilmer, Texas. Recent major changes include the November 2024 announcement and December 2024 completion of a transformative $340 million acquisition of Trina Solar's U.S. manufacturing assets, comprising the Wilmer facility that commenced production in November 2024 with 30% of output secured by offtake agreements and projected 2025 EBITDA of $75-125 million rising to a full-year run-rate of $175-225 million; a February 2025 rebranding to T1 Energy amid abandonment of a $2.6 billion battery gigafactory in Georgia; March 2025 selection of Rockdale, Texas, for an $850 million G2 5 GW solar cell plant with construction targeted for Q2 2025 and first production in H2 2026; an August 2025 polysilicon and wafer supply agreement with Corning; and a €122 million European Union Innovation Fund grant in October 2024 for cathode active material development. T1 Energy targets domestic U.S. energy markets to support AI data centers, electrification, and reshoring, leveraging abundant renewable-sourced materials like silicon, glass, and aluminum while exploring optimizations for its Norwegian and Finnish project portfolio.
