Business
Greif, Inc. is a global leader in industrial packaging products and services, manufacturing and marketing a broad range of packaging solutions including steel, plastic, and fiber drums; intermediate bulk containers; flexible products such as flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) and container liners; corrugated containers; packaging accessories; containerboard; and reconditioned containers. The company also provides product filling, packaging, and related services across various industries such as chemicals, petroleum, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, agriculture, mining, construction, and lubricants & petrochemicals. Greif operates strategically in more than 40 countries with over 200 locations worldwide, serving customers of all sizes and needs. Founded in 1877 and headquartered in Delaware, Ohio, Greif maintains a strong global footprint and a diversified product portfolio. In recent major strategic developments, Greif sold its containerboard business in August 2025 to Packaging Corporation of America for $1.8 billion as part of its "Build to Last" strategy, aiming to sharpen its portfolio focus towards high-margin businesses and enhance capital efficiency. This divestiture, along with the sale of its timberlands business, supports debt reduction efforts and financial rebalancing, positioning the company for more consistent earnings and growth investments. Additionally, Greif is advancing a cost-cutting and business transformation program targeting $100 million in annual savings through 2027, with accelerated optimization initiatives in 2025 possibly driving total savings up to $120 million. The company also emphasizes sustainability initiatives, including improved forest management and renewable energy projects, reinforcing its commitment to eco-friendly packaging solutions. Greif’s operations are segmented primarily into Customized Industrial Packaging, Flexible Products & Services, and Rigid Industrial Packaging, offering products designed for safe storage and transportation tailored to meet stringent technical and regulatory industry requirements. The company’s services extend to packaging design and engineering, supply chain optimization, sustainability consulting, and recycling programs. Greif’s customer base is global, with significant sales in the United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and the Americas. The company is led by CEO Ole Rosgaard and continues to drive growth through innovation, operational efficiency, and a customer service-focused approach. Overall, Greif positions itself as a comprehensive industrial packaging provider with a strong emphasis on portfolio optimization and financial discipline following strategic divestitures and ongoing operational improvements. This enables it to maintain a competitive advantage in diverse markets worldwide across a broad spectrum of industrial packaging needs.
