Business
Glencore plc is a leading global diversified natural resource company engaged in the production, refinement, processing, storage, transport, and marketing of metals and minerals, energy products, and agricultural commodities. Founded in the 1970s and headquartered in Baar, Switzerland, with a registered office in Saint Helier, Jersey, Glencore operates in over 30 countries and employs around 150,000 people. The company offers a broad portfolio of commodities including copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, lead, ferroalloys, steelmaking coal, thermal coal, crude oil, oil products, natural gas, and agricultural products. Additionally, Glencore is one of the world's largest recyclers of end-of-life electronics and complex secondary metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Glencore's customers span industrial consumers in automotive, steel production, power generation, battery manufacturing, and oil sectors, supported by their comprehensive logistics, marketing, and financial services to commodity producers and consumers globally. The company has a strategic focus on supplying commodities essential to the energy transition and low-carbon economy, emphasizing metals critical for EV batteries and renewable energy infrastructure. Among recent major developments, in November 2023 Glencore completed the $9 billion acquisition of the steelmaking coal business from Teck Resources, significantly expanding its coal operations. Although Glencore initially planned to spin off its coal assets, the company reversed this decision in August 2024 following shareholder consultation, opting to retain the coal business for enhanced cash generation and funding opportunities within transition metals. Furthermore, in July 2024 Glencore secured final regulatory approval for acquiring a 77% interest in Elk Valley Resources from Teck, reinforcing its steelmaking coal portfolio. On the strategic partnership front, Glencore made a $200 million investment in Li-Cycle in 2022, a North American lithium-ion battery recycler, establishing a global feedstock supply agreement and expanding its footprint in the lithium-ion battery materials supply chain. Glencore operates through three main business segments: metals and minerals, energy products, and agricultural products. The company’s strategic moves in 2024 and 2025 enhance its position as a major integrated producer and marketer of essential commodities, with a notable presence in both established and emerging markets worldwide. Its activities contribute significantly to sectors ranging from heavy industry and energy to sustainable technologies and recycling, aligning with its purpose to responsibly source commodities fundamental to everyday life and the global transition to a low-carbon economy.
