Business
Port of Tauranga Limited operates New Zealand's largest container port, handling international freight, bulk cargoes, and logs; it provides wharf facilities, cargo handling, storage, and transit services including berthage, cranes, tugs, pilotage, and bunkering; additionally, it offers property management, terminal operations, and logistics through inland ports and joint ventures. The company manages segments encompassing port operations with container terminals at Tauranga and Sulphur Point, bulk cargo wharves for forestry products, dairy, and other exports; property services for port land assets; and terminal services via subsidiaries like Quality Marshalling for container marshalling and ancillary logistics. Its national network includes MetroPort Auckland and Christchurch as intermodal freight hubs connected by rail; a 50% stake in PrimePort Timaru and Timaru Container Terminal; Ruakura Inland Port joint venture with Tainui Group Holdings in Hamilton; and Coda Group logistics with Kotahi, incorporating Tapper Transport and Metro Pack; it also co-owns Port Connect cargo management software. Port of Tauranga serves importers, exporters, forestry, farming, and kiwifruit sectors nationwide, primarily through the Bay of Plenty gateway with links to Auckland, Waikato, central North Island, Timaru, and Christchurch. Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Tauranga, New Zealand, it lists on NZX as POT.NZ and remains a subsidiary of Quayside Securities Limited. Recent developments include the June 2025 completion of a consortium acquisition of Marsden Maritime Holdings, involving the sale of its 50% Northport stake for a $50 million gain; a May 2025 five-year strategic partnership with Zespri and Tauranga Kiwifruit Logistics to expand kiwifruit exports through 2029; a July 2025 trial of New Zealand's first all-electric straddle carrier funded by EECA; an August 2025 fast-track application for Stella Passage berth extensions facing judicial review; and strong FY2025 financials with underlying NPAT of $126 million on 25.3 million tonnes of trade.
