Business
Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, ranks among China's largest integrated refining and petrochemical enterprises; it processes crude oil into refined petroleum products, intermediate petrochemicals, synthetic resins and plastics, synthetic fiber raw materials, and synthetic fibers. The company, founded in 1972 as Shanghai Petrochemical Complex and restructured in 1993, maintains headquarters in Jinshan District, Shanghai, and operates primarily in China with products sold domestically and internationally. Core products encompass refined oil products including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas; intermediate petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, paraxylene, purified terephthalic acid, acrylonitrile, ethylene glycol, ethylene oxide, and vinyl acetate; synthetic resins and plastics like polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester chips, and polyvinyl alcohol; synthetic fiber raw materials and polymers including polyester and acrylic precursors; and synthetic fibers such as acrylic staple, acrylic top, polyester staple, and polyester industrial yarn; supported by comprehensive capacities of 16 million tons/year for crude oil processing, 845,000 tons/year for ethylene, 4.24 million tons/year for organic chemical raw materials, 970,000 tons/year for synthetic resins and plastics, 1.14 million tons/year for synthetic fiber raw materials, 590,000 tons/year for synthetic fiber polymers, and 340,000 tons/year for synthetic fibers. In January 2025, the company announced a 21.31 billion yuan ($2.91 billion) investment to upgrade operations, including shutting down 18 existing refining units and installing new ones to sustain crude oil processing capacity, boost ethylene refining to 1.20 million tons annually, enhance new material production variety and capacity, and increase raw material output, with main construction targeted for completion within three years pending shareholder approval. The company also supports parent Sinopec initiatives like the 2022 INEOS partnerships involving Shanghai SECCO equity transactions and high-density polyethylene joint ventures, alongside ongoing R&D in petrochemicals, synthetic materials, and environmental technologies through its Post-Doctoral Station and State Synthetic Fibre Engineering Research Center.
