Business
HSBC Holdings plc (HSBC) is a British multinational universal bank and financial services holding company headquartered in London, England, with origins tracing back to its founding in Hong Kong in 1865 as the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation; HSBC Holdings plc was formally established in 1991. The group operates through three principal global business segments—Wealth and Personal Banking, Commercial Banking, and Global Banking and Markets—offering a comprehensive range of products and services including retail banking deposits and lending, wealth management, asset management, insurance, transaction banking, corporate finance, advisory, capital markets, securities custody, trade finance, global private banking for high-net-worth individuals, and payment solutions; it serves over 54 million wealth and personal banking customers, more than 2 million commercial clients, and institutional counterparts worldwide across Europe, Asia-Pacific (with a strong emphasis on Hong Kong, mainland China, India, and Singapore), the Middle East, Africa, North America, and South America. In recent strategic developments, HSBC continues its pivot toward high-growth Asian markets, including the proposed privatization of its Hong Kong subsidiary Hang Seng Bank to strengthen its position in the region, the completion of the acquisition of Citigroup's retail wealth portfolio in mainland China in June 2024 to bolster wealth management capabilities, and approvals to open branches in 20 new cities in India alongside the acquisition of L&T Investment Management; the group has also divested non-core assets such as its businesses in Canada, Argentina, France retail banking, and others while securing additional licenses in mainland China, and HSBC Asset Management achieved final closes on its Vision Venture Capital 2024 (USD192.8 million) and Vision Private Equity 2025 (USD276.2 million) funds in August 2025 to expand alternative investment offerings.
