Business
Illumina, Inc. is a global life sciences company specializing in developing, manufacturing, and marketing integrated systems and tools for genetic and genomic analysis. Its core products and services include next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms such as the NovaSeq X series; sequencing kits and reagents; microarray kits and reagents; molecular biology reagents; gene expression analysis; genotyping solutions; and multiomics applications including genome sequencing, copy number variation (CNV) analysis, and DNA methylation profiling. Illumina also provides molecular diagnostic products and services, including comprehensive genomic profiling tests for oncology, and offers instrument services, training, and consulting. The company serves a broad customer base comprising genomic research institutes, clinical research organizations, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and governmental laboratories across the Americas, Europe, Greater China, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa. Founded in 1998, Illumina is headquartered in San Diego, California. In the last 1-2 years, Illumina has made significant strategic advancements to expand its technological and commercial footprint. In 2025, Illumina launched BioInsight, a new business unit focused on combining sequencing, data analysis, software, and artificial intelligence to enable deeper biological insights for pharmaceutical research, drug target identification, and novel disease mechanisms discovery. Additionally, Illumina completed the acquisition of SomaLogic, a leader in data-driven proteomics, enhancing its multiomics strategy by integrating SomaLogic's aptamer-based proteomics platform to drive advanced biomarker discovery and disease profiling. Illumina further expanded its personalized cancer care efforts through new partnerships with global pharmaceutical companies to develop companion diagnostics enabled by its TruSight Oncology Comprehensive genomic profiling test. The company also introduced innovative technologies such as a 5-base sequencing solution for simultaneous genomic and epigenomic insights and Constellation mapped read technology to detect complex genomic variants. Illumina operates primarily through two segments: Core Illumina, which encompasses life sciences and genomics research products, and GRAIL, focusing on early cancer detection technologies. The company's continued investments in advanced sequencing technology, data analytics, AI-driven discovery, and multiomics integration reinforce its leadership position in genomics and molecular diagnostics worldwide.
