Business
Imperial Oil Limited Imperial Oil Limited engages in the exploration, production, refining, and marketing of petroleum products and petrochemicals across Canada. The company operates through Upstream, Downstream, and Chemical segments; Upstream activities encompass the exploration and production of crude oil, natural gas, synthetic crude oil, and bitumen from key assets including the Kearl oil sands mine, Cold Lake in-situ operations, and a 25% interest in the Syncrude joint venture; Downstream involves transportation, refining at facilities in Nanticoke, Sarnia, and Strathcona with combined capacity near 400,000 barrels per day, and marketing of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, asphalt, heating oil, and lubricants under the Esso and Mobil retail brands at approximately 2,600 sites; Chemical operations produce petrochemicals such as polyethylene and solvents. Imperial Oil manufactures and sells about a quarter of Canada's petroleum products, serving retail consumers, commercial fleets, industrial clients, and export markets primarily in Western and Eastern Canada, with operations focused on Alberta, Ontario, and other provinces. Founded in 1880 and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, the company maintains a majority ownership stake of approximately 69.6% by ExxonMobil Exxon Mobil Corporation. Recent developments include achieving record upstream production of 433,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day in 2024, the highest in over 30 years, driven by full-year records at Kearl and a nearly 10% production increase at Cold Lake; completion and first production from Canada's largest renewable diesel facility at the Strathcona refinery in July 2025; commencement of the Enhanced Bitumen Recovery Technology pilot on the Aspen lease with startup anticipated by 2027; plans for higher 2025 crude production from Kearl and Cold Lake alongside capital expenditures of C$1.9-2.1 billion focused on bitumen recovery and the Leming SAGD redevelopment; and announcement of a 20% workforce reduction by end-2027 with consolidation of Calgary activities to the Strathcona refinery.
