Business
Ionic Rare Earths Limited engages in the mining, refining, and recycling of magnet and heavy rare earth elements for energy transition, advanced manufacturing, and defense sectors. Incorporated in 1998 and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, the company operates its flagship Makuutu Rare Earths Project, an ionic adsorption clay-hosted deposit comprising six licenses covering approximately 300 square kilometers in eastern Uganda; develops refining capabilities for separating magnet and heavy rare earths including dysprosium and terbium into high-purity oxides for downstream metals, magnets, and compounds; and advances recycling of spent neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets and swarf through its 100% owned subsidiary Ionic Technologies International Limited, which employs patented technology developed at Queens University Belfast to produce separated magnet rare earth oxides exceeding 99.9% purity. The company maintains a 50% interest in the Viridion joint venture in Brazil with Viridis Mining and Minerals Ltd for rare earths development and pursues global expansion across North America, Europe, and Asia. Recent developments include securing $15.6 million in October 2025 through a renounceable rights issue and placement, featuring a $3 million strategic investment from Argentem Creek Partners to fund a Belfast magnet recycling plant, Viridion advancements, and other opportunities; signing a non-binding memorandum of understanding in May 2024 with Less Common Metals to collaborate on high-purity rare earth oxide supply, magnet recycling, and alloys including samarium-cobalt and scandium; entering a five-year memorandum of understanding with SENAI FIEMG Innovation and Technology Centre in Brazil for rare earth magnet production; and executing a November 2025 memorandum of understanding with US Strategic Metals to establish permanent magnet recycling operations in Missouri, aligning with the US-Australia critical minerals framework.
