Japan Tobacco Inc. (JAPAY) manufactures and sells tobacco products; develops and markets pharmaceuticals; and produces processed foods including frozen noodles, packed rice, okonomiyaki, bakery items, and seasonings such as yeast extracts and oyster sauces. In its tobacco business, the company's core segment, it offers cigarettes under global flagship brands Winston, Camel, Mevius, and LD; heated tobacco products including Ploom X and Ploom X ADVANCED; E-vapor and T-vapor products; fine cut tobacco; cigars; pipe tobacco; smokeless tobacco; hookah; kretek; and reduced-risk products like infused tobacco capsules and heated tobacco sticks, sold in over 130 markets worldwide with significant operations in Japan, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Its pharmaceutical operations focus on prescription drugs for cardiovascular, kidney, metabolism, immunity/inflammation, and central nervous system therapeutic areas, while the processed food business targets domestic Japanese and select Asian markets. Founded in 1985 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, the company employs approximately 53,600 people across nearly 40 tobacco factories and 25 processed food facilities globally. In 2024, Japan Tobacco agreed to acquire Vector Group Ltd., the fourth-largest U.S. tobacco company, for about $2.4 billion to expand its combustibles presence and market share from 2.3% to 8% in the profitable U.S. market; in 2025, it completed the transfer of its pharmaceutical business and shares in subsidiary Torii Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. to Shionogi & Co., Ltd., streamlining its portfolio to emphasize tobacco and processed foods; it also launched Ploom X ADVANCED and With2 heated tobacco products in Japan and relocated its head office to Kamiyacho Trust Tower in Tokyo.
