Business
Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL) operates as Japan's flag carrier airline, providing scheduled and non-scheduled international and domestic passenger services, cargo and mail transportation, and related aviation services including maintenance, ground handling, and airport passenger support. The company offers full-service carrier operations through its mainline fleet of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, serving over 60 domestic destinations and 39 international destinations across Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania from primary hubs at Tokyo's Narita and Haneda airports and secondary hubs at Osaka's Kansai and Itami airports; low-cost carrier services via subsidiaries Jetstar Japan and Zipair Tokyo; regional feeder flights operated by affiliates including Hokkaido Air System, J-Air, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Transocean Air, and Ryukyu Air Commuter; and cargo services under JAL Cargo encompassing general cargo, J Speed express, and dangerous goods transport. Additional offerings include mileage programs such as JAL Mileage Bank, lifestyle and financial services like JAL Pay digital wallet and multi-currency JAL Global Wallet, travel agency services through JALPAK, in-flight meals and duty-free via JALUX Inc., and air mobility initiatives. JAL conducts operations worldwide to approximately 220 destinations in 35 countries through direct flights, codeshares, and oneworld alliance partnerships with members like American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific, alongside joint ventures on transpacific and Japan-Europe routes; it targets leisure, business, and cargo customers with premium cabin classes including First Class suites, Sky Suite business class, Sky Premium premium economy, and economy options on select aircraft such as the Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 777-300ER. The company maintains a fleet of around 279 aircraft across the group and employs 38,433 consolidated staff as of March 31, 2025. Founded on August 1, 1951, and headquartered at the Nomura Real Estate Building in Higashi-Shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, JAL functions as the core of the Japan Airlines Group following its 2011 emergence from bankruptcy and 2012 Tokyo Stock Exchange relisting. Recent developments include a strategic investment in payments provider Episode Six in March 2025 to advance JAL Pay and financial services integration, building on their partnership since 2017 that originated with JAL Global Wallet; new codeshare agreements with IndiGo for expanded India connectivity and a planned joint business with Garuda Indonesia launching in spring 2025; a sponsorship deal with Major League Baseball to boost Japan-U.S. travel; announcement of Boeing 767-300BCF freighter conversions for dedicated cargo resumption in early 2024; and leadership transition in April 2024 with Mitsuko Tottori appointed as the first female president and CEO, succeeding Yuji Akasaka as chairman. JAL reported record revenue of 1.844 trillion yen for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, alongside treasury stock acquisition of up to 8 million shares, reflecting ongoing profitability and capital management post its historical merger with Japan Air System in 2002 and oneworld membership since 2007.
