Kao serves consumer, professional salon, and industrial markets across Asia, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania. Founded in 1887 and headquartered in Nihonbashi-Kayabacho, Chūō, Tokyo, Japan, the company maintains subsidiaries including Kao USA Inc., Kao Germany GmbH, and Kao (China) Holding Co., Ltd.. In recent strategic developments, Kao revamped its Cosmetics Business strategy in September 2025 to accelerate growth, focusing investments on six key brands--Sensai, Molton Brown, Kanebo, Sofina, Curél, and Kate--with three overseas expansion models targeting doubled luxury sales in Asia, 50% of Curél sales outside Japan primarily in Europe by 2027, and 150% growth for Kanebo and Kate in Thailand; acquired Bondi Sands in Australia to bolster skin protection offerings; completed a major upgrade to its UK Green Street manufacturing site; and launched its medium-term plan K27 emphasizing globalization and technological integration across categories.
