Business
KDDI Corporation engages in telecommunications services primarily in Japan, operating through two main segments: Personal Services and Business Services. The Personal Services segment provides mobile telecommunications services including multi-branded offerings under au, UQ mobile, and povo; entertainment services such as video and gaming; electricity generation through solar power plants; life transformation activities; and financial services including home and mortgage loans and consulting. The Business Services segment delivers smartphones and other devices, network and cloud services, and data center services under the TELEHOUSE brand to corporate customers. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, KDDI maintains extensive operations both domestically and internationally. Recent major developments include KDDI's acquisition of Sharp Corporation's Sakai Plant to convert it into a large-scale AI data center equipped with advanced GPU technology to support generative AI and related businesses, expected to be fully operational within 2025. Additionally, KDDI Canada completed a $1.35 billion acquisition of an urban data center portfolio in Toronto to expand its data center footprint. In January 2025, KDDI launched “ConnectIN povo,” a new business model distinct from traditional subscription plans aimed at consumers. The company continues to enhance its digital services portfolio with a 30% increase in investment focusing on cloud computing and cybersecurity, underscoring its strategic shift towards digital transformation. KDDI also maintains global connectivity with submarine fiber optic networks and invests in partnerships and open innovation to drive new value in AI, IoT, and 5G technology applications across industries. KDDI Corporation serves a broad range of customer segments including individual consumers, corporate clients, and governments. Its product and service portfolio spans mobile communications, fixed-line services, data centers, cloud and network infrastructure, renewable energy generation, and financial services. The company manages subsidiaries such as KDDI Canada and Soracom, Inc., focusing on IoT solutions, and operates globally with ICT solutions offered in over 100 countries. KDDI's strategic emphasis on customer-centric innovation, digital transformation leadership, and sustainability is reflected in its expanding mobile subscriber base of approximately 47 million and commitments to carbon neutrality by 2030. The company leverages advanced communications infrastructure and AI to support a range of sectors including mobility, entertainment, and enterprise digitalization, marking it as a comprehensive telecommunications and digital services provider with a robust presence in Japan and international markets.
