Business
Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Nasdaq: LGND) is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and acquiring technologies that enable pharmaceutical companies to discover, develop, and commercialize medicines, while managing one of the industry's largest and most diverse portfolios of over 90 partnered commercial and development-stage biopharmaceutical royalties spanning cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and rare conditions marketed in more than 70 countries. The company licenses its proprietary Captisol platform technology, a chemically modified cyclodextrin that optimizes drug solubility and stability and enables FDA-approved products such as Gilead Sciences' Veklury, Amgen's Kyprolis, Baxter's Nexterone, and Acrotech Biopharma's Evomela; its NITRICIL platform technology, which facilitates tunable dosing and adjustable drug release profiles for proprietary formulations across indications; and additional technologies including HepDirect, LTP, BEPro Technology Platform, and Pelican Expression Technology. Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Jupiter, Florida, with original operations in San Diego, California, Ligand generates revenue through royalties on commercialized products, license and milestone payments, and sales of Captisol material, serving a global network of biopharmaceutical partners including Amgen, Merck, Pfizer, Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Gilead Sciences, and Baxter International across North America, Europe, and Asia. In recent developments, Ligand acquired APEIRON Biologics in July 2024 for $100 million in cash plus milestone payments, adding QARZIBA, the only marketed immunotherapy for high-risk neuroblastoma in Europe and other regions, to bolster its royalty portfolio; completed a $75 million financing leadership in Castle Creek Biosciences, securing a high-single-digit royalty on D-Fi for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa; and provided $70 million alongside Medtronic to Orchestra BioMed in 2025 to advance late-stage cardiology programs AVIM therapy and Virtue SAB. Further, Ligand's subsidiary Pelthos Therapeutics merged with Channel Therapeutics in July 2025 following FDA approval and commercial launch of ZELSUVMI, a first-in-class topical asimadoline for chemotherapy-induced diarrhea entitled to a 13% worldwide royalty and $5 million milestone for Ligand, which now holds 56% ownership; invested $25 million plus a potential additional $15 million in Orchestra BioMed's cardiology assets in August 2025; purchased global royalty rights to AT220 (Arestat-enhanced biosimilar) and related fees for AT292 from Arecor Therapeutics in September 2025 for $7 million upfront plus $4 million in milestones; and its partner SQ Innovation received FDA approval for Lasix ONYU, a Captisol-enabled at-home IV diuretic for heart failure edema, in October 2025. These transactions, alongside portfolio updates such as Chugai Pharmaceutical's pending acquisition of Renalys Pharma advancing sparsentan (Filspari) in Japan, underscore Ligand's strategy of funding mid- to late-stage programs for economic rights and technology licensing to drive diversified royalty growth.
