Business
Macy's, Inc. Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M) operates as a leading omnichannel retail company in the United States, owning and managing prominent department store chains including Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and the beauty specialty retailer Bluemercury. The company offers a broad assortment of products and services encompassing women's, men's, and children's apparel; accessories; intimate apparel; shoes; cosmetics and fragrances; home furnishings; jewelry; and miscellaneous consumer goods, with a mix of national brands, private labels, and exclusive collaborations available through physical stores, macys.com, bloomingdales.com, and bluemercury.com. Macy's, Inc. serves middle- to upper-income consumers seeking fashion, beauty, and home essentials, operating approximately 640 Macy's locations across 43 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam, alongside Bloomingdale's flagship and outlet stores and over 200 Bluemercury shops, with e-commerce reaching more than 100 international markets. Founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy as a dry goods store in New York City, the company maintains its headquarters at Macy's Herald Square in New York City since 2020, following a relocation from Cincinnati, Ohio. Macy's, Inc. pioneered retail innovations such as fixed pricing, diverse product merchandising, and iconic traditions like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, evolving into one of the world's largest fashion goods retailers with a focus on department stores, online apparel sales, and specialty beauty retail. In recent strategic developments under its "Bold New Chapter" initiative launched in February 2024, Macy's, Inc. plans to close approximately 150 underperforming Macy's stores by 2026 while enhancing 350 others and expanding its "First 50" blueprint—featuring upgraded merchandising, customer experience, and omnichannel integration—to 125 locations in fiscal 2025, driving consecutive quarters of comparable sales growth in pilot stores. The company accelerates luxury segment growth by planning around 15 new Bloomingdale's stores in smaller formats, alongside at least 30 new Bluemercury openings and 30 remodels under a "New Blue" model with expanded assortments, aesthetic services, and centralized hubs; it also launched a digital marketplace in 2022 partnering with AlixPartners and Mirakl. Additional moves include forming a joint venture with TMG Partners in November 2025 for potential redevelopment of its San Francisco Union Square flagship, rejecting and facing renewed acquisition bids from Arkhouse Management and Brigade Capital totaling $6.6 billion in 2024, and expanding post-purchase offers via a partnership with Rokt to boost retail media, loyalty programs, and credit card enrollment.
