Business
Ramaco Resources, Inc. operates as a producer and developer of high-quality metallurgical coal primarily used in steelmaking and is advancing into the critical minerals sector with the development of rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals at its Brook Mine in Wyoming. The company’s core products include high-grade metallurgical coal extracted from several active mining complexes in Central Appalachia and southwestern Virginia, encompassing properties such as Elk Creek, Berwind, Knox Creek, and Maben. Additionally, it is developing a vertically integrated rare earth and critical minerals production platform under the subsidiary Ramaco Rare Earths, Inc., focused on producing commercial rare earth oxides and critical mineral concentrates essential for advanced technology applications, including military, batteries, and medical devices. Recent major company developments include the approval and strategic pursuit of a national Strategic Critical Minerals Terminal (SCMT) at its Brook Mine, designed to stockpile and manage rare earth and critical mineral oxides, developed in collaboration with Goldman Sachs as an exclusive structuring agent. This initiative aims to establish a fully integrated upstream, midstream, and downstream critical minerals supply chain within the U.S., positioning Ramaco as a leading domestic producer of critical materials. The company has also increased its feedstock production target at the Brook Mine to approximately 5 million tons per year with anticipated commercial oxide production of about 3,400 tons annually, reflecting a 175% increase from prior estimates. A pilot oxide processing plant is slated to commence operations by mid-2026. In addition, Ramaco recently secured a five-year mining permit for the Brook Mine, marking it as the first new rare earth mine in the U.S. in over 70 years and the first new coal mine in Wyoming in more than 50 years. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, Ramaco Resources operates within the coal mining and critical minerals industries. The company serves domestic and international steel producers by supplying premium metallurgical coal and is expanding its footprint in the critical minerals sector to support national strategic supply chain needs. Its coal operations benefit from approximately 60 million tons of metallurgical coal reserves, with exports to over 20 countries. Ramaco combines traditional coal mining with innovative research and pilot facilities for advanced carbon products derived from coal, holding around 76 intellectual property patents and licensing agreements tied to these technologies, reflecting a diversified approach to resource utilization and market needs. The company remains engaged in negotiations for coal sales to North American steel groups while simultaneously accelerating its critical minerals strategy to align with federal and market demands for domestic supply chain security.
